    WTCC CARS

The World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) is an international Touring Car championship organized by the FIA.

The WTCC was first held in 1987 concurrent to the long-running European Touring Car Championship (ETCC) in a Group A format, with races held in Bathurst and Mount Fuji. The championship was won by Roberto Ravaglia in a BMW M3. The series was not considered a success, due to the high costs involved, and lasted just a year.

In 1993, with the high popularity of the Supertouring category, the FIA hosted the Touring Car World Cup - an annual event for touring car drivers hailing from national championships all over the world. The 1993 race at Monza was won by Paul Radisich. The race was run for two more years, (won by Radisich again in 1994 at Donington Park, and Frank Biela in 1995 at Paul Ricard) before disappearing into obscurity.

In 2001, the ETCC was resumed with support from the FIA. At the request of interested manufacturers, it was changed to the current WTCC beginning with the 2005 season, and is now considered the third most important FIA championship after Formula One and the World Rally Championship.

With rounds at major prestigious circuits, the series is heavily supported by car manufacturers BMW, Alfa Romeo and SEAT. Ford, Chevrolet and Honda are also involved. It features compact and midsize cars based on Group N rules, yet modified to Super 2000 regulations, an intermediate level between the slightly modified Superproduction cars and the extinct Supertouring class.

Following the trend of recent FIA rules, cost control is a major theme in the technical regulation. Engines are limited to 2000 cc. Many technologies that have featured in production cars are not allowed, including variable valve timing, variable intake geometry, ABS brakes and traction control.

Guernseyman Andy Priaulx won the 2005 championship for BMW, ahead of Dirk Müller and Fabrizio Giovanardi.

    BMW 320si WTCC 2006

Launch of the BMW 320si WTCC 2006
International Motor Show (IAA), Frankfurt am Main

BMW presents the motorsport version of the new 3 Series at the IAA.
Frankfurt (GER), 12th September 2005. BMW defines the direction for the future ? this time in touring cars. From 12th September, the Munich automobile manufacturer presents the motorsport version of the new BMW 3 Series at the 61st International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. From 2006, the car will be competing in the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) and in many other racing series around the world.

The 275 bhp racing car was developed by BMW Motorsport. It is the racing version of the special model BMW 320si, which will be on offer from BMW dealers as a limited edition from December 2005. Like its production counterpart, the motorsport version of the BMW 320si will be driven by a powerful 2-litre four-cylinder in-line engine. The car complies with the Super 2000 regulations and is 45mm longer and 36mm wider than its predecessor.

With this car BMW will continue the tradition of customer sports in 2006. Apart from the World Touring Car Championship, in which BMW competes with national teams, the successful racing version of the BMW 320i is also racing in Championships in Denmark, Italy, Russia, Sweden and Asia. Until now, more than 100 racing sports kits of the E46 series have been sold to motorsport teams by the BMW racing parts distributors.

BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen says, ?Touring cars without BMW is unthinkable ? and BMW is equally unthinkable without touring cars. This is what made the brand grow, and we will stick to this tradition. Apart from works support we have always been keen to keep racing affordable for our customers and at the same time offer a high-performance package. This tradition is now continued by the racing version of the new BMW 3 Series. I am sure that this model will write further chapters of BMW?s successful history.?

In the World Touring Car Championship, the BMW 320i is currently in its last season. Six races prior to the season finale, Dirk Müller (GER) of BMW Team Deutschland leads the drivers? table, closely followed by his brand-mate Andy Priaulx (GBR) who competes for the BMW Team UK. The Manufacturers? Championship is also lead by BMW, which looks likely to bring the title home to Munich yet again.

Touring car racing is BMW?s most successful discipline. The brand can boast an impressive list of successes: 20 European Championship wins with FIA sanction and winner of the first and only World Championship in 1987. Over the past couple of years, BMW came first in the manufacturers? competition of the FIA ETCC. In 2004, Priaulx won the drivers? title in the European Championship.

      cuore sportivo

      Overview

Alfa Romeo is synonymous with ?cuore sportivo?.
Racing has always been part of its DNA, and Alfa Romeo has always raced to win. The 2005 sporting season sees the Alfa Romeo Racing Team taking part in the first edition of the World Touring Car Championship: four Alfa 156s will be in action on the most important international circuits, just as tradition dictates.

      The car

The Alfa 156 has taken part in competition since its launch, and since 1998 it has won 14 overall titles in Touring Car Championships (including constructor, driver and team titles), a category dominated by Alfa Romeo for over 40 years.

      Alfa Romeo 156 Titles
      • 1998 - 1st place, Italian Super Touring Car Championship - Constructors and Drivers
1st place, Italian Touring Car Championship - Drivers

1999 - 1st place, Italian Super Touring Car Championship - Constructors and Drivers

2000 - 1st place, European Super Touring Car Cup - Team and Drivers

2001 - 1st place, Italian Touring Car Championship - Drivers and Team

2002 - 1st place, European Touring Car Championship - Constructors and Drivers

2003 - 1st place, Touring Car Championship - Team and Drivers

        2004 - 1st place, Touring Car Championship - Team
        - 2nd place, Touring Car Championship - Constructors

      The drivers

The drivers of the Alfa Romeo Racing Team together boast a sporting curriculum replete with overall victories and international titles.
Gabriele Tarquini has competed in several Formula 1 world championships, and claimed the drivers? title in the 2003 European Touring Car Championship with Alfa Romeo, with whom he also won the British title in 1994.
Fabrizio Giovanardi is a specialist of touring events: his list of achievements includes three consecutive European titles with Alfa Romeo (2000, 2001, 2002).
The young Brazilian, Augusto Farfus, was the 2003 Formula 3 European Champion and made his touring car debut last season with Alfa Romeo.
The English champion, James Thompson, is in his first full season with Alfa Romeo, having competed in a few selected races of the European Touring Car Championship in 2003 and 2004, the year in which he won the British championship.

      The Team

Alfa Romeo?s long tradition of competition continues as the 2005 season gets under way, thanks to its official participation in the first edition of the World Touring Car Championship.
Sporting the colours of the Alfa Romeo Racing Team are four Alfa 156s, driven by the Italian drivers Gabriele Tarquini and Fabrizio Giovanardi, the young Brazilian Augusto Farfus and the Englishman James Thompson - a strong team that cut its teeth in the 2004 European Touring Car Championship, with Alfa Romeo claiming second place in the constructors? championship after dominating the 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 editions, winning both the Constructors? and Drivers? titles.

          Chevrolet WTCC

          SUPERB FIRST VICTORY FOR CHEVROLET

Alain Menu wins on the wet in Brands Hatch

"BRANDS HATCH, May 21st, 2006 ? The Chevrolet WTCC Racing lived an historic day at Brands Hatch as Alain Menu scored the first victory of a Chevrolet Lacetti in the World Touring Car Championship. Less than a year and a half since the debut in the world?s top competition for touring cars, Chevrolet has managed to climb on the highest spot of the podium, Race 2 of today?s event and clinching also an excellent fourth place in Race 1 with Rob Huff."

          RML History

Chevrolet's technical and motorsports partner for the 2005 World Touring Car Championship programme is RML (Ray Mallock Limited). Founded in 1984, RML has among the most enviable track records in motorsports, with every race or rally car designed by RML having won in its first year of competition and secured a championship title within two years.
After five successful years in the FIA World Sports-Prototype Championship, RML moved to touring car racing in 1992, running a pair of privateer Ecurie Ecosse Vauxhall Cavaliers (Opel Vectra in some markets). In 1993, RML ran its first in-house-designed Vauxhall Cavalier and frequently outpaced factory-supported cars. As a result, RML was awarded "works" status for Vauxhall in 1994.
Running the Vauxhall Sport team in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC), RML also supplied and supported eight Vauxhall and Opel teams worldwide. Success soon followed, as RML won the 1995 BTCC team and driver championships, as well as the Spanish Touring Car Championship. In 1996, the cars won touring car championships in Australia and Thailand.

When Nissan decided to return to the BTCC it also turned to RML. In 1998, the second year of the programme, RML duly won the team and manufacturer championships, followed by a "clean sweep" in 1999, winning driver, manufacturer and team championships.
Parallel to the touring car programmes, Opel chose RML to design and develop its Astra Formula 2 rally car. From a clean sheet of paper, the car was designed in less than five months, with its competition debut following just a month later. In 1998, its first year of competition, the car won the German Rally Championship. In 1999, the RML Astra won rally championships in Germany, Norway and Sweden, followed by 2000 championship titles in Great Britain, Germany and Norway.
In late 2000, RML was asked by Opel to design and develop the Opel Corsa Super 1600 Rally Car, of which 14 are now successfully competing around the world.

Also in 2000, Saleen Inc. awarded RML a contract to design and build the first American supercar, the 7-litre Saleen S7, and its racing version, the Saleen S7R. This project took just eight months from sketch to production of two prototypes.
In its first racing season, the car won 11 races from 16 starts, including the Sebring 12 hours. RML raced the car in the 2001 ELMS (European Le Mans Series), winning the manufacturer, team and driver championships.

In 2002, RML became one of the first European motorsport organisations to undertake oval racing programmes in the form of ASCAR (a European version of NASCAR) and the Champcar World Series.

For the 2002 Rockingham (UK) Champcar event, RML prepared and managed the Team St. George car driven by Darren Manning. This event marked the Champcar debut for both the driver and team, who were rewarded with a competitive 9th place finish after having led for part of the race.
In ASCAR, the RML team claimed the 2002 and 2003 championship titles with drivers Nicolas Minassian and Ben Collins. RML returned to touring car racing in 2004, managing the factory SEAT programme in the BTCC. The team soon returned to its winning ways by collecting eight race wins during the season.

In 2004 RML also participated in the FIA GT Championship (Saleen S7R's), the Le Mans 24 Hours (Lola MG Prototype) and the Le Mans Endurance Series (Lola MG Prototype).

In 2005 RML will also contest the Le Mans Endurance Series with a new Lola MG Prototype. The company recently added another accolade to their collection when they took LMP2 class honours in the Le Mans 24 Hours with the Lola MG.
