    1st Generation (72 - 79)

    The first Honda Civic was introduced on July 12, 1972. It came with either 2-door or 3-door body. 4-door model (w/o trunk) was added in 1973. Civics were firstly powered by 1.2L or 1.5L CVCC engines. CVCC was standardized thru the whole line since August, 1975. The 1.2L engine was then replaced by a 1.3L model in 1978. 1 million Civic were produced by 1976 and it reached 1.5 million a year later.

    2nd Generation (79 - 83)

    The Civic was redesigned and sized-up. Beside the 3-dr and 5-dr hatchbacks, 4-dr sedan and station wagon were also available. The engines were more powerful than before. CVCCII engines, with improved power output and gas mileage, came to the market in July, 1980. By May,1982, over 3 million Civic were sold.

      3rd Generation (83 - 87)

      CRX coupe was added to the Civic line and 5-dr hatchback was eliminated. While there was no significant growth in body size, the engine performance was improved. In 1984, a 135ps 1.6L DOHC 16-valve PGM-FI engine (ZC) became the power plant of the Si model of Civic and CRX. 4WD also came as an option.

        4th Generation (87 - 91)

        With independent double wishbone suspension and the lower and wider body, Civic became more capable of high speed cruising. Performance was more and more concerned. The VTEC technology, shared from Honda F1 race, came to street finally. A 160hp 1.6L DOHC VTEC engine (B16) was powering the top-of-line Civic and CRX SiR since 1989.

          5th Generation (91 - 95)

          Station wagon was no longer available. Same engines remained, but tuned for more power. At the same time SOHC VTEC and VTEC-E were developed for low-cost power boosting and better fuel economy. A US-built Coupe was available since 1993.

            6th Generation (95 - 99)

            SOHC VTEC was changed form 2-stage (lo-hi rpm) to 3-stage (lo-mid-hi rpm). Multi Matic Transmission became available. In 1997, a special race-tuned hatchback, known as " " was add to the line.
