Apparently you need a special tool for this engine to be able to reset the timing.
Had the car recovered to a BMW dealer and 2 weeks later (they were fully booked, not even any space reserved for emergency breakdowns !!) its fixed.
Timing chain guide had broken, replaced that, and also the tensioner for good measure, reset the timing and compression test done.
fortunately no other engine damage! car now runs very well, power loss from before has gone, and engine is much quyieter on start up
If you have a N42 engine thats losing a bit of power and has a slightly rattly start-up, then i recommend you change your chain guide and tensioner fast!

Hi all
I recently posted about my 2002 318i touring having camshaft sensor failure (according to fault codes)...
well its not very good news - my Indie replaced both the camshaft sensors today and the car starts now, but runs rough and backfires....he has spoken to a friend whos an ex BMW mechanic and they think the timing chain has jumped a cog, making the engine go out of time.
so its probably not the sensors at fault at all...apparently this is a fairly common problem on N42 engine....
Trouble is my Indie has not fixed one before and does'nt want to do the job...he suggested I give the car to BMW to fix - needs correct tools etc and to remove VANOS unit etc to get at the chain - he says later cars had a modified sprocket/tensioner? fitted with some sort of plastic cover to prevent the chain from jumping...
So I will have to phone BMW tomorrow to get a quote...gulp... I fear this is going to get expensive...

i would urge anyone with a n42 engine to get their tensioner changed now, my car is only on 48k miles!
he showed me the one they removed it was completely compressed allowing the chain to be slack god only knows hows the timing didn't jump
