      Pozdrav i bez ljutnje!
"Driving an Alfa Romeo is not like driving an ordinary car in an ordinary context. It is pure driving desire turned into a car which is also the expression of one's personality. When you are in the driving seat, your hands on the leather steering wheel, you are at one with your Alfa Romeo: the road before your eyes, the tyres's grip on the road, your heart beating at the same rpm of your engine."

              Mazda tops reliability poll

Mazda has been named the most reliable motor manufacturer in the UK.
The Japanese car giant topped a poll organised by insurance company Warranty Direct.

              Most reliable cars

              1. Mazda
              2. Ford
              3. Honda
              4. Toyota
              5. Vauxhall

              Source: Warranty Direct
(based on cost of repairs and number of breakdowns)
Manufacturer rankings were based on the number of breakdowns and the average cost of repair.

A Warranty Direct spokesman said problems with Mazda cars were "few and far between" and the cars "aged well".

"Infrequent garage visits, quick repair times and reasonable bills have kept it as the most reliable manufacturer in the UK," he said.

The second most reliable car, the survey suggests, is Ford, thanks mainly to its low annual repair cost of ?208.

The average age of the vehicles analysed was 4.8 years, with 49,702 miles on the clock.

              Least reliable cars

              1. Jeep
              2. Subaru
              3. Land Rover
              4. Alfa Romeo
              5. Saab

              Source: Warranty Direct
(based on cost of repairs and number of breakdowns)
The biggest improvement on last year's survey came from Nissan, which jumped nine places in the list of 23 manufacturers surveyed.

Jeep was the worst performer, with an average repair bill of ?587.92, and 41 claims per 100 insurance policies held.

Jeeps were afflicted by air conditioning failures and rear suspension and axle problems, Warranty Direct said.

Subaru's dramatic fall, from 11th last year to 22nd this year, was largely down to costly repairs to the Impreza's engine and transmission units, with the average bill reaching ?1,040.

                Alfa Romeo
                ? League position: 26th
                ? Claims per 100 vehicles: 39.4
                ? Average age (years): 4.05
                ? Average mileage: 47,068
                ? Average repair cost: ?423
? Average time for repair (hours): 3.87

For the third year running, Alfa Romeo has one of the lowest average mileages and some of the youngest cars in this survey, yet it continues to sit near the bottom of the reliability table.

There is little improvement on its showing in last year?s survey, with just 0.1% fewer claims per 100 cars. What?s more, Alfas are among the most expensive and time-consuming cars to fix when things do go wrong, with an average repair cost of ?423 and an average repair time of nearly four hours.

As far as individual models go, the 156 fares better than the 147, which only just escapes inclusion on the list of the bottom 10 cars overall.

Verdict: ** Another disappointing result from Alfa

                BMW
                ? League position: 17th
                ? Claims per 100 vehicles: 34.0
                ? Average age (years): 4.64
                ? Average mileage: 50,786
                ? Average repair cost: ?266
? Average time for repair (hours): 2.0

BMW has slipped from 14th place in last year?s reliability survey to 17th this year.

Owners mainly experience problems with the axle and suspension (35%), followed by the cars? heating and ventilation systems (20%).

The good news for BMW drivers though is that the company still has one of the quickest repair times ? mechanics take an average of just two hours to fix problems ? and costs have stayed down. The average repair cost is one of the lowest in this year?s survey at ?266.

Despite the generally poor overall rating, BMW has four models in the top 25, including the 3 Series Compact (?94-?01), which sits in 15th place.

Verdict: ** A disappointing performance overall, but repair costs and times remain impressively low.

sad ce ispasti da ja pljujem alfu...

                    156:
Alfa Romeo made a big effort to improve quality for the 156 and a lot of the company's well-documented problems were sorted: rust's not an issue these days, for a start.

The 156 has, nonetheless, scored very poorly in reliability and customer satisfaction surveys; it's not so much that the car is hideously unreliable (many owners have done high mileages trouble-free) as that when a problem did arise, the dealers weren't particularly helpful or sympathetic. There have been some mechanical issues - do some research of owners' internet forums and the like before buying - though most glitches have been related to electrics, electronics and so on. The complex Selespeed gearbox has been problematic, in particular.

                    147:
Although the 147 is put together with high-quality materials and appears well made, its reliability record is unimpressive. Selespeed models seem particularly prone, but all models can suffer electrical problems and occasional mechanical trouble. Buying a 147 is a bit of a lottery - you'll probably get a good one, but you might get a very bad one. And back-up from the dealer network leaves much to be desired, although Alfa Romeo says it's taking steps to remedy this.

                    spider:
Alfa's rust problems have long since been banished to the history books. Problems with electrics are not unheard of, though, and don't be surprised if the interior squeaks a bit. Owners report that the Spider is generally pretty trustworthy, but common faults include worn and badly-fitted rear suspension components, dodgy alloy wheels and problems with the hood mechanism and motor. Alfa also amended its recommended intervals for timing belt and tensioner replacement from 72,000 miles to just 36,000 miles, so if buying secondhand, make sure that this has been observed. Alfa tends to score badly in reliability and customer satisfaction surveys, though this is down more to poor service at its dealerships than the durability of the cars themselves.

Alfa tends to score badly in reliability and customer satisfaction surveys, though this is down more to poor service at its dealerships than the durability of the cars themselves.

                          Alfa Romeo 164

                          Performance four-door saloon
                          Introduced 1989

For: Excellent performance from all engines, especially the 24V V6. Spacious, distinctive styling and a great drive. Now very, very cheap.
Against: Running costs can be steep, especially if things go wrong. Minor niggles can become annoying.

The 164 proved that there was a real alternative to the BMW/Mercedes/Audi executive cartel. In 1988 it was the best saloon that Alfa had ever made, at a price that most of us could afford without any major traumatic, tear-stained upsets. Second-hand, of course, it's even cheaper - and owning an Alfa no longer makes you the butt of rust and reliability jibes. Alfa Romeo did its homework and produced a car that behaved like an executive express should. The styling was distinctive, and there were some glorious engines under the bonnet. In 3.0-litre V6 form it makes a beautiful racket, and in Cloverleaf tune, it's even more raucous. In Lusso trim, meanwhile, it has every creature comfort a fat cat could wish for. Inexpensive and exciting in almost equal measures, the 164 is the Alfa you don't have to make excuses for buying.

                          Alfa Romeo 164 1988-98

164 3.0 V6 launched in October 1988 with 2959 cc, 192 bhp engine, electric heated mirrors, power steering, adjustable steering wheel, tinted glass, remote fuel and boot releases, electric sunroof, electric seats and windows, central locking and rear head restraints. Lusso had electric rear seats, air-conditioning, rear sunblinds, CD player and electric aerial. June '89 Optional four-speed automatic introduced. September '90 Facelifted 164 got a catalytic converter and revised suspension. October '90 Cloverleaf launched with 200 bhp, bodykit, electronic suspension and leather electric seats. May '93 Standard model redesignated Super, with 24-valve 210 bhp engine; Cloverleaf now 230 bhp. Also got slimmer headlights, new rear lights, larger door mirrors and bumpers, side impact beams, new seats, trim and instruments, an alarm/immobiliser and a six-speaker radio/cassette.

164 2.0 Twin Spark launched in July 1990 with 1962 cc, 148 bhp, catalyst engine, tinted glass, electric windows and central locking. Lusso version also had an electric sunroof and alloy wheels. September '90 Revised suspension and facelift. May '93 1995 cc, 146 bhp cat engine and revisions as 3.0 V6. September '93 Lusso version discontinued. June '95 ABS brakes standard. March '96 Super Lusso introduced.

                          April '98 164 range discontinued.

                          Alfa 164s to Buy
For those who really enjoy driving it has to be the V6 3.0. Driving the front wheels through a very fast and slick five-speed gearbox, it'll do 140 mph, and 0-60 mph in under eight seconds. It's an aural treat, too, as the engine makes a wonderful sound. The ride is quite firm, and if there is one regular criticism from road-testers it's torque-steer, as the front wheels fight to get a grip on all that power. But as long as you don't behave like a maniac, there is little chance of you upsetting the car, which otherwise handles well. The standard specification is impressive, but a Lusso would be better. May '93 cars look more modern, and have important safety upgrades and an even more powerful engine.
The 164 Twin Spark may not have the instant appeal of the snarling V6, but it's no slouch, with 0-60 mph in under 10 seconds and a 130 mph top speed. With less power through the front wheels, it is easier to keep on the straight and narrow, which, together with the cheaper servicing and insurance, make it the sensible 164.
To sum up, the V6 is the best buy, the Twin Spark the most practical and the Cloverleaf for show-offs.

                          Alfa 164s to Avoid
Any 164 that has had multiple owners, looks shabby or has no service history. Almost everything is expensive to fix on a 164, so pay slightly more for an immaculate example - there are plenty around. White is a very bad choice and non-Lusso Twin Sparks can seem quite basic. Non-specialist dealers with cheap 164s won't know what they have and will probably be selling you a heap of trouble.

                          Buying the best 164
The ideal purchase scenario is a 164 with full service history and as few enthusiastic owners as possible. The engines are reliable unless tinkered with or criminally neglected. The V6 is strong, but an old fault that could recur is the failure of cylinder head gaskets. So if the car seems to be running hot and there is white sludge around the oil filler, consult a specialist. Look for oil leaks at the front of the engine where the belt tensioner is. The gearbox is another reliable piece of kit, although there were gear-linkage problems that should have been sorted out under warranty. There shouldn't be any major rust on the bodywork: stone chips and parking scrapes are likely to be the only blemishes. Like the rest of the 164, the survival qualities of the interior trim are surprising. The plastic is not of the highest quality, and the switchgear decidedly Italianate in layout, but it should all be intact. Just be mindful of the poltergeist electrics that still afflict Alfas, and check that all the toys are working. On the test-drive, stop, look and listen. Watch out for noisy wheel bearings and driveshafts, and brakes that are pulling to one side. Hard driving will eat up the front tyre treads.

                          Alfa 164 Alternatives

                          Audi A6 2.8E
Better built and more durable than the Alfa. Has a much better driving position too, and the Quattro model sticks to the road. Lacks the Alfa's character, though.

                          BMW 535i
Old 5 is smooth and able, and very cheap now, too. Big bills if faulty, though, and there are lots of iffy ones around. Looking dated.

                          Saab 9000 2.3 Turbo
Closely related to the 164, but power provided by Turbo. Very quick, well equipped and good value.

                            Mercedes-Benz W124

The W124 was a substantial, mid-sized luxury vehicle platform, the last in a long line of "money-no-object" Mercedes saloons and was the result of extensive development. Estate cars (and optionally, saloons) had self-levelling rear suspension very similar to that of a Citroën BX; with gas-pressurised spheres, levelling suspension struts and an underbonnet pressurising pump. Unlike Citroën, Mercedes used rear springs as well as struts. Front suspension was more conventional.

It represented the pinnacle of road-going automotive technology at its introduction, incorporating innovations that were praised by the entire motoring press. It had the lowest coefficient of drag (CD) of any vehicle of the time (.30) due to its aerodynamic body (and set off a styling trend that was consequently copied by the entire industry) including plastic molding for the undercarriage to streamline airflow beneath the car, reducing fuel consumption and wind noise. It had the first multi-link suspension to be found in a mass-produced vehicle, reducing the compromise between ride comfort and handling. It had a single windscreen wiper that extended and contracted in a synchronized manner to cover more surface area (by use of a motorized mechanism at its base). It even had rear headrests that would recede at the touch of a button on the dash to improve rearward visibility when appropriate. Fuel injection was standard, and the engine incorporated various other features that resulted in performance figures that rivaled the sports cars of the time (within reason). It set the benchmark for passenger vehicles for the next decade or so.

The estate cars came in 5- or 7-seat models, the 7-seater having a rear-facing bench seat that folded flush into the floor. Both models had a split rear seat which folded flat to give almost 2 metres of load space and a retractable luggage compartment cover and retractable cargo net. The W124 estate continued in production alongside the new W210 until the W210 estate launched more than a year later.

SsangYong Motor Company of Korea licensed the W124 design and continues to produce a stretched version of the W124 as the Chairman, with a Ssangyong badge. It has a 2.9 m wheelbase and 3.2 L Mercedes straight-6 engine.

The original E-Class from the 80s and into the 90s was nothing short of a legend. For build quality and reliability it was unmatched and even today buyers actively seek out the very best examples. The 1995 E-Class that followed it was underwhelming in so many respects. Firstly it looked as though it had melted. But more worryingly, Mercedes' commitment to quality was found wanting, and an embarrassing number of customers were subjected to the full breakdown experience - an experience that should have been warded off by the three-pointed star on their bonnet.

Mercedes had to do something. That something was this car, the 2002-2006 E-Class, which was a tad smaller than the previous generation in both width and length yet still had plenty of space inside. Mercedes inserted lots of reinforcements to up the strength and make sure that this was one the safest cars an executive could own. Smart use of aluminium panels, including the bonnet, boot lid and front wings, ensured the weight did not increase.

                              Pogotovo Alfa, Saab i Subaru!!!
